This conference aims to bring together school leaders from across the city to discuss and debate what character education is, its place across schooling at all key stages (KS1-5), how it can be delivered in all aspects of the curriculum, and the benefits of developing a rich character provision. Hosted at the new University College Birmingham (UCB) Sixth Form in the heart of Birmingham City Centre, hear from leading academic thinkers at the Jubilee Centre for Character and Virtues and from local school leaders who have embedded character development into their school ethos and provision.
The Jubilee Centre has been based at the University of Birmingham since 2012. Researchers have led the way in research and development activities around the theory and practice of character for over a decade; leading the way to refocus the debate on the purpose of schooling and education. Their research-informed work has provided evidence on ‘what' character education is. ‘how' it can be provisioned for in schools, and ‘why' it is vital for all stakeholders in education to include a character focus.
The Association for Character Education (ACE) aims to provide direct practical support and to build capacity within schools to enable them to embed character in meaningful, authentic and effective ways. ACE are a national association, but have strong roots in Birmingham, and the conference will include a panel of local school leaders of ACE schools.
BEP support the prioritisation of character, making implicit efforts more explicit, championing best practice and pioneering new activity that can help showcase how to make Birmingham a city of character.
Lunch will be provided in the restaurant at the College of Food.
