The BEP Curriculum Improvement offer includes specialist–led subject networks in English and in 10 foundation subjects. Each course will be delivered by experts in their field. This session will be led by Sarah Baker and Keith Farr.
In these progressive sessions we will explore how to create a meaningful musical experience for children through warm-ups, developing singing, and using a range of stimuli as a basis for composition. By the end of the three practical sessions, participants will have a range of ideas and experiences from which to build a creative and integrated curriculum for music across their school. Each session will follow a similar structure of warm-ups, learning a song, which will include unison and part-singing and then explore a range of ways of developing composition. As well as performing a song it will be then used to develop compositional or performance ideas using both unturned and tuned accompaniments, demonstrating how themes can be used by children to make their own compositions. In addition, each session will focus on different practical ideas for exploring compositional techniques, as indicated below. There will be opportunities for discussion on appraisal and progression throughout
Composing structured soundscapes using instruments and body percussion.
Using external Stimuli for compositionArt and image will be used to inspire sound and melody. In this session we will also explore different methods of score writing, including graphic score and simple notation.
Storytelling through compositionSimple stories will be used to develop themes and musical ideas around a given structure. We will build on previous skills and concepts to show how progression and extension activities can be easily incorporated into planning. This session will include time to share information about different schemes of work and how music can be integrated into the whole school ethos.
